Event: Screening child care and education workers – with Tracey Warren
Date: June 6, 2012
Location: Global National News
Details: Child Safe Canada's Safety Expert Tracey Warren will discuss the importance of adequate security screening for child care and education workers.

Warren reminds all parents and caregivers in wake of the horrific tragedy in a Toronto shopping mall to make sure your child is in safe and secure hands. Two weeks before he allegedly opened fire in the Eaton Centre, Christopher Husbands was a part-time City of Toronto employee working with kids in an after-school program. "What went wrong with our system? How do we let people with convictions into our schools and child care facilities?" asks Warren. "It seems that many of the gate keepers were sleeping. There are places that an agency can be a little less than perfect but child safety and security is not one of them. Is is a basic expectation that agencies have continual and stringent screening in place for all staff working with children" Warren informs parents that all accredited agencies have reports and inspections posted for parents to see. "Ask your child care or educational agency to show you current police and child welfare reports as well as first aid and insurance. Be the first and most critical layer of safety for your child. If the facility doesn't produce documentation of a safe and secure environment - move on to a safer place for your child. Tune in tonight for more on safety and security screening for staff working with children and tips to keep your kids safe.
